US Plans to Expand 232 Tariffs to More Auto Parts, Public Comment Period Ends

2026-01-28

The US International Trade Administration (ITA) has announced that the first opening period for applications to include more imported auto parts in the 232 Tariff List started on January 1, 2026 and ended on January 14. Previously, the ITA stated that such two-week application windows will open four times a year, in January, April, July and October respectively. This adjustment may affect the cost and trade layout of global auto parts exported to the US.

Applications must include clear identity information of the applicant, accurate description of the involved commodities, 8-digit or 10-digit US Harmonized Tariff Schedule numbers for the commodities requested to be included in the tariff scope, explanation of why the commodities belong to auto parts, relevant information on the affected domestic industry, statistics on imports and domestic production, and description of how and to what extent imports have increased, which may harm national security or otherwise undermine the goals of the 232 Auto Tariff. After the application window closes, the accepted applications will be published on the regulations.gov website, with a 14-day public comment period. The ITA will make a final decision within 60 days after receiving the application.
